What Is Process Safety Management (PSM)?

13-Jan-2022 10:33 AM

Due to an OSHA rule, Process Safety Management (PSM) became popular because businesses have to manage hazardous chemicals safely, preventing "unexpected releases of toxic, reactive, or flammable liquids and gases" that can cause disasters. Technology platforms, procedures, and management frameworks are usually part of Process Safety Management systems.

As the implications of the PSM became clearer, other versions have been developed. There are 20 elements within four pillars, according to the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS).

Worldwide, there are different models for chemical process safety. To limit risks associated with hazardous chemicals, Seveso III Directive (2012/18/EU) has been implemented as a PSM in the European Union. PSM is covered by the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015 in the United Kingdom. Several countries in the Middle East have implemented Safety Management Systems (SMS), which include PSM. Regulations regarding hazardous goods and major hazardous facilities govern process safety in Australia. A similar system is being designed in Japan by the AICHE.
