ISO 29990 sets out the criteria for a Quality Management System standard for providers of education and training services. ISO 29990 provides a unified standard for learning service providers, including corporations, vocational institutions, and life-long learning centres, around the globe. Furthermore, ISO 29990 is a standard reference for conceptualizing, developing, and executing programs, which represents a unified model for quality and professionalism.

A generic model for professional practice and quality performance of learning service providers has been developed in response to the ISO 29990 Certification - Learning Services Management Systems.

ISO 29990 is divided into two main areas: learning services (for example, they include services such as designing, providing, monitoring, and providing support for learning services) and management at the learning service supplier, including business planning, financial management, risk management, and human resource management. In the past, there have been few standards that are able to be applied internationally to learning providers. Learning providers gain advantages by making their own services transparent, comparing them globally and establishing specifications for quality assurance.
