Environmental Noise Assessments and Monitoring

22-Oct-2021 15:59 PM

Most countries experience environmental noise pollution, especially in areas that have a high population density. This can cause a nuisance to residents in these areas. Noisy sources are often one of the most complained about aspects of our daily lives for the simple reason that they have a direct effect on the quality of life and health of the people (and animals) living nearby.

An international investigation to find out how much noise affects us was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in October 2018. This study concluded that it was one of the top environmental hazards to both physical and psychological health in Europe; and where noise levels are too high, people become stressed, annoyed, and suffer from sleep deprivation, which experts fear will negatively affect heart health (cardiac) and mental health. As a result of a study conducted by the EU in 1996, a number of Directives have been written to increase the level of information on environmental noise in the EU and the need for more industries to monitor their impact.
